Brand
Choose the brand you are interested in. If you do not see your brand of interest in the list, type the brand name into the “Additional Key Words” field. NOTE: If you choose a particular brand, such as Marlboro, and do not specify any other field, your search will come up with ALL items related to Marlboro (across all media types and categories; ie, all Marlboro cigarette packs, magazine ads, posters, direct mail, clothing, other products, etc.) across all years. To narrow down, search in an additional field of interest. If you are not interested in just one particular brand, leave the field blank.
Item Date
To view items from a particular year or time period, enter in the year or the year range. Using the date range, you can search for historic and current items separately. To view items across all years, leave the field blank.
Media Type
You may also be able to narrow your search by knowing what kind of media type you are interested in. The most common media types in this collection are: tobacco products, magazine, ephemera, other – paper. A few that need some explanation:
- Clothing all forms of clothing, including t-shirts, socks, hats, jackets, jewelry, etc.
- Ephemera 3-D this is the broadest category in the collection. Extends beyond the classic definition of ephemera as paper goods and includes large outdoor ads, point of sale displays, counter displays, promotional items (mugs, wallets, ash trays, lighters, bags, etc., but not clothing).
- Other – product (tobacco) “tobacco” style products that do not contain tobacco, such as herbal cigarettes and candy cigarettes
Item Category
What topic are you interested in? All items in this database fit in to one or more of these item categories.
Additional Key Words
Typing in “key words” may also help you narrow your search, or help you find items that relate to categories of interest that are not listed under the Item Category field. Think of a key word that might be used to describe the item you are looking for and then search. Below is a list of “Additional Key Words” that can help in your search.
